St. George of Mythimna - Kisamos

The single - room, vaulted church of St George in the archeological site of Methymna, near Drapania of Kisamos, was built during the first half of the 15th century, in the place of a late Roman Bath.

Part of the walls of the bathroom is walled up in the masonry of the church. The church survived in bad condition and the wall paintings was covered in whitewash. In the framework of the Regional Operational Programme of Crete fixing and restoration works were performed in the church, uncluding revelation and preservation of the wall - paintings.

The decoration of the walls is partly rescued and it is a good quality work of the first half of the 15th century. Particularly interesting is the representation of the Holy Trinity in the form of three faces and the representation of St Pachome with the angel bringing the monastic rule.
