MUNICIPALITY of RETHYMNON
The picturesque town of Rethymnon, haVING retained the color and character of the Venetian and Turkish period, at least in the center, dominates the area. Tourism is a key position in the economy of the Municipality of Rethymno and 19% of the economically active population is engaged in activities directly related to it (hotels and restaurants). However, the economy of Rethymnon remains "alive" during winter, thanks to the students of the University of Crete, which has its seat in Rethymno, whereas students are estimated to about 7000. Rethymnon is rich in monuments of unique beauty such as temples, monasteries and Venetian castles and villages. The emerald waters and picturesque landscapes offer many navigation features and sports such as diving, sailing, cycling etc. Carnival, taking place every year in Rethymnon, is also one of the most well known and successful attractions in Greece for many visitors.
Arcadia Region
The historical Monastery of Arkadi, the most important self-sacrifice monument in Crete is located in this region. In this Monastery 964 Cretan rebels blew themselves and died on November 8, 1866 in order to avoid falling into the hands of the Turks. The area is famous for its clean beaches, such as the ones located in Adelianos and Pigianos Campos, in Scaletta having gained great tourist value for the prefecture of Rethymno, hosting some of the most important hotels of the municipality.
Lappea Region
The unique beauty of Argyroupolis sources offer a cool heaven in a region where small, crystal waterfalls along the tourist infrastructure, form a great space. Other interesting areas are Episkopi, a large village with a flourishing economic activity and Miriokefala which thanks to the miraculous church of Panagia Myriokefalitissa receives visitors from all over Greece.
Nikiforos Fokas Region
It is a greater settlement with major economic development and growth in the region is Atsipoloulou. The site is located close to the town of Rethymno and is being very well developed. However, it has also traditional villages that have marked the history of the region. There are obvious signs of the Venetian past, such as Roustika area, however, there are also traditional villages such as Kato Varsamonero.
