MUNICIPALITY of HERAKLION
Three continents and many destinations in the world are connected through the airport and the port of Heraklion which is the largest urban center in Crete, the capital of the region and the economic center of the island. Heraklion is a tourist area having as poles of attraction the Palace of Knossos and the archaeological museum with significant findings. It is a city with rich economic activity and large businesses. It is also a student town hosting all faculties of Theory Sciences of University of Crete, hosting also the seat of technological institute of Heraklion, the technology and Research Institute. Furthermore, after the unification with neighboring municipalities, according to the “Kallikrates” system of administrative reform of the country, Heraklion has both rural and agricultural population. The city consists also the commercial and scientific center of the island. It possesses a strategic geopolitical position in the southeastern Mediterranean, connecting three continents and many different cultures.
Alikarnassos Region
A dynamic economic and social area of Alikarnassos is mainly inhabited by the descendants of Asia Minor who were settled there. It hosts the airport, the Prison and the Industrial area which is continuously growing both in the secondary and tertiary sector and in the services sectors. The region also hosts military units, while closest beaches are located within the administrative boundaries of the Municipality of Heraklion.
Paliani Region
Great part of the inhabitants is involved in agricultural and livestock farming operations, however, secondary production units have been developed within last years. There are areas of exceptional natural beauty in the region, such as canyons, caves, and traditional villages. The residential development in the area has also been developed, since people working in Heraklion choose this region as their place of residence due to its proximity.
Temenos Region
Farming, agriculture and handicrafts are the main sources of survival for the region which is very fertile. The region of Prophitis Elias has been the largest village and former seat of the municipality. It is located near the city of Heraklion and in recent years it has underwent intense residential development. Southeast of Prophitis Elias hill rises Dikorfo of Roka, where Nicephoros Phocas in 961 AD built the fortress mosque.
Gorgolaini Region
Hilly region whereas at least half of the area is covered with vineyards and olive trees. Livestock farming is also developed but by lower percentages (Pano Asites Kato Asites, towers), as well as building, trade and tourism. It has some secondary sector units, whereas certain alternative forms of tourism are developed in Asites region.
