MUNICIPALITY of CHERSONISSOS
It is the biggest tourist Municipality of Crete and the most popular destination from abroad. It is one of the most well-known tourist resorts in the world with hundreds of companies engaged in this field. Following unification with the old municipalities of Malia, Episope and Gouva, it has been populated by residents involved in agricultural activities, however tourism remains the main profession of the region. Apart from the big hotels and accommodation in Chersonissos Port, there are traditional villages in Ano Chersonissos, Analipsi and Koutouloufari. The tourist can also find authentic Cretan villages to the Lassithi Mountain Range, such as Potamies and Kera.
Gouves Region
The tourist region of Gouves includes remarkable infrastructure, such as organized beaches, large luxurious hotels, family apartments, restaurants, taverns, nightclubs, sports clubs, and shops. However, the inland region has small picturesque villages, important monuments such as the monasteries of "Kyra Eleoussa" and Ag. Ioanns Theologos, the caves of Elythia and Good Friday.
Malia Region
The coastal area of Malia is engaged in tourist activity, whereas people in inland area are engaged in agriculture. Its tourist accommodation is significant, while the so called "patatochorafa" are very well known, producing high quality potatoes. Regarding tourist life, Malia is known for its nightlife. The palace of Malia is one of the most important archaeological sites.
