25 August Street
Already from the Venetian period the road connecting the port to St. Mark\'s Square where there was the ducal palace, was the most important road of the city. On 25 August 1897 the road completely destroyed by the Turks and the destruction is accompanied by the slaughter of about 500 Christians and 17 British soldiers. From this sad anniversary has taken the name of the current road. In the early 20th century after the liberation of Crete by the Turks, the 25th August is the busiest and most prestigious street of Heraklion. Construct new buildings, hosting services and other important functions of the town, which give a grand and impressive picture for visitors coming from the port.
