Gates of Heraklion
The Venetian fortifications had four main gates are located at the four cardinal points. In the north end of the current route on August 25, was the "Gateway to the shore" communicating with the port. To the west was the "Gateway of the Almighty", next to which there is now a new commanding "Chanioporta". East on what is now the city's main square, Freedom Square, is the "Gate of St. George". To the south were the "Gate of Jesus". Apart from these main gates were still three gates that facilitate communication in the city with the sea. The west was a "Gate of St. Andrew" took its name from the bastions there, which was the weakest defense of the walls (The Turks invaded from there in 1669). The second in the east called the "Gate of Sand" because it led to the beach to the east of the city. The third in the north is the "Dermatas Gate" west of the History Museum.
