Kallikratis gorge

Kallikratis is a relatively small gorge in the southeast region of Lefka Ori (White Mountains) in Chania Prefecture. The gorge connects the mountainous pasture lands with the lowland villages. Is not very popular to tourists but is a very pleasant walk, offering great views and rare flowers. The Kallikratis Gorge together with the Asfendou Gorge can be a full day’s excursion.

Start early in the morning, when it is still cool, and climb from Agios Nektarios to Asfendou, and from there head on to Kallikratis. Until recently, if you found yourself at Asfendou or Kallikratis, you had the feeling that time had stopped many decades ago. With the recent construction of the tar road though, this feeling of isolation is lost. Nevertheless, life is now easier for the people who live there.
